Alocasia Macrorrhizos has large, glossy emerald green leaves up to one metre in length that are held aloft. The striking leaves have prominent veining on the underside of the leaves and provide great swathes of colour contrast as a background to lower flower borders.
They also go well in pots or tubs but may only reach 2 metres in height.
It is used extensively in tropical regions as a landscaping plant due to its wonderful sculptural shapes and ability to provide shade in a garden. In fact nothing says 'Tropical Garden' better than this plant.
It will thrive in direct sun or with a fair amount of shade - not too much though.
The flowers are made up of a white spadix surrounded by a green semi open sheath and the resultant fruits are small red berries.
